Storrington Junior success this winter season

(April 10, 2010)
Many Storrington juniors had a winter to remember.

For Dominic Fritche (11) it finished with him reaching the final of the Sussex Winter Postal event. Dominic had a notable win in the semi-final over No. 1 seed Jack Beuttell-Triggs 3-6, 7-5, 10-8. Rallying from 8-2 down in the Championship tie-break. In the final Dominic lost to Tommy Cartledge 6-3, 6-3.

This has resulted in Dominic's first Sussex call-up for the U12 friendly match Vs Surrey.

David Wakefield also had success in the U12 postal, beating three 9.2 players, and therefore qualifying for the main draw before losing to Oliver Dixson. Lewis Emmerson reached the Semi-final of the U12 consulation draw, losing to Louis shaw 6-3, 6-0.

Storrington were well represented in the Sussex U14 girls, with Romey Fritche, Rebecca Farrow and Isabel Bryant all having good results. Eleanor Inman qualified for the Quarter-finals before losing to Holly Danbury. Eleanor had a good winter, moving her rating upto a 9.1.

In the Mini tennis section, Sophie Kitson finished top of the Sussex Mini Masters Orange girls event, winning the Storrington and Holbrook legs of the tour. This was a great achievement, well done Sophie!

In the Boys Orange U9 leaderboard Alex Manktelow finished 7th, Ben Ingham 10th and Evan Blake 23rd. In the Red U8 Boys Alex Tatchell came 15th, Joe Trees 19th and Gus James 23rd.

Finally, Sam Venn (13yrs old) had some encouraging results this winter, he won the U14 Indoor Series and kingsley Tennis centre, winning both the semi-final and final on championship tie-breaks 10-7 and 10-4 respectively. These results ensure Sam's rating will move up to a 6.2 at the end of this winter and he reached No.1 ranking in the County during this time.

Sam also competed in a number of Tennis Europe events in Scandinavia, winning the doubles event at one and narrowly missing out on a singles ranking at another. Sam will be part of the Storrington Men's 1st team this summer who are hoping to gain promotion to Sussex division 1.

Well done to all players who competed (I have only mentioned a few!). It's vital players compete regularly around the county, experiencing different players, conditions and environments will only enhance the learning experience, and benefit future development.

Well done to all those who competed and good luck for the summer!
